March 2017: Ploughing ahead in the garden.

What a busy time it’s been here in the Walled Garden! The hard landscaping in the Soft Fruit Garden, which has been our big winter project, has progressed well and is now complete thanks to the hard work and expertise of the team. The beds will soon be ploughed and then left fallow for this season as we work on eradicating the weeds. We hope to plant the area this time next year.

The final part of the espalier avenue has been constructed and the apple trees have been planted and are all ready to grow. This has added additional height to the garden and frames Garden Cottage beautifully. Please do come and take a look as it has made a big visual impact. By the way, if you fancy buying your very own apple tree, we are now selling them the from our shop.

A new feature in the vegetable beds this year will be the Perennial Vegetable Garden with accompanying interpretation. The area has been planted and the first of vegetable, which is rhubarb (yes it is a vegetable!) has already started to come out on dormancy. This should prove an interesting feature to the garden as it’s a group of plants which people rarely focus on.

Please do come down and see our beautiful Crocus in bloom, we added another 12,000 to the collection this year which groups from Fochabers nursery and school kindly helped us plant.
